16 years today my brother Kenneth said come on the charter and shoot some video. It'll be fun he said. With the exception of when I let him talk me into going out the day before Christmas, it was the coldest, and wettest, I think I have been in a boat. I didn't have fancy rain wear like he and his customer Steve Lambert had. A wet snow came down the whole time. Saw some snowmen in Esky yards on the way home... Did catch some nice fish though!!! Quite the contrast though with the 73 degrees I saw last time I checked today. I love El Nino!!!

Thinking about the funeral today of the best friend the Bays de Nocs has ever had, fishery biologist Jerry Peterson, I remembered I had some video of him in action from a few years ago. Doing what? Planting walleye of course! RIP my friend. Kevin Lee

Just want to share with my guests the passing of a truly good man. He played a pivotal role over many, many years and I dare say is the person most responsible for the fishery we have today on the Bays de Nocs. A straight shooter who would tell you like it is. Not long before my dad passed, Jerry stopped by to chat. Which is something my dad would normally do with him around noon at the Swallow Inn several days a week but had to give up towards the end. Anyway, over a couple hours that day, Jerry and dad solved all the worlds problems! I can still close my eyes and hear them yipping away and laughing too! So thank you Jerry for everything you did for the Bays de Nocs and also for being such a good friend to my dad. COMMON LOONS BELATEDLY RETURN TO SENEY

Due to this spring’s late thaw, many Refuge loons, having migrated north from oceanic wintering grounds at the beginning of April, have spent the past two weeks idling on Lake Michigan while making daily flights to Seney in overhead search for safe landing zones; it was only this Monday that tongues of open water on several pools began swelling to loon-accommodating dimensions. Among those who dropped into these areas were the D Pool female, Vert, who was first color-marked as a successful mother on adjacent G in 2011, and Sekhen, who was hatched on T2 West in 2009, and who has spent most of his adult Refuge tenure as an unpaired “floater” without a breeding home. Because the recent territories of the world’s oldest documented Common Loons, ABJ and Fe, remained largely frozen this week, it is not particularly concerning that neither has yet to be spotted as a returnee; with ice now in rapid retreat, their H and I Pool domains should be navigable within a day or two.

Some sure signs of spring yesterday evening (4-10-26) at the Rapid River boat launch. The Osprey are back🙂. First time seeing a flock of Wood Ducks. Aaaaaand I missed the focus...😡. And what I thought at first glance was a couple of stumps on the ice, was actually a couple immature bald eagles. Kevin Lee
