Carol and I decided our fall adventure this year would be Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Over 2,000 miles of driving, hiking, exploring, and this time we brought Katydid — our dog, our travel companion, and, let’s be honest, the queen of the household.

Katy has a travel bed we use for camping, but in the truck she gets antsy, shifts around, wants to be in the front seat, and generally acts like she’s trying to file a complaint with management. So we invested in the HEST.

It was a hit.

Katy is 55 pounds, so technically the medium would have worked, but when her highness is truly comfortable she stretches out like she’s claiming land. The large was the right choice.

She slept like a champ. And when it was time to hike, she tackled 5 and 10mile trails like a two-year-old pup.

The bed worked in the truck, rolled up or folded to easily move to hotels or carry to the camp — wet hikes, muddy hikes, sandy beach walks — she’d come back filthy, we’d wipe her down, and the bed’s protective liner kept the foam clean. The cover came off easily and washed up perfectly when we got home.

If only Katy could talk.

When we got home, we decided to ask her. For several nights we put both her donut bed and the HEST bed down side by side. Each night she chose the HEST. She still humps the donut — loyalty is loyalty — but when it’s time to sleep, she picks comfort.

This year HEST is proud to sponsor the Rebelle Rally, and our gear is out in the field right now being well-used by competitors and the Rebelle Rally staff alike.

The Rebelle Rally is the longest competitive off-road rally in the United States and the first for women. Eight days and 2,500 kilometers across the American West.

The course tests not only the team behind the wheel but the rigs and their gear.

Rebelle Rally competitors choose HEST year after year.

No GPS, no phone, this competition focuses on precise navigation using a paper map and compass.

Before sunrise, the days check points are plotted by hand.

Heat, dust, rock, sand, altitude, and every type of weather. Competitors challenge themselves (and our gear) day after day.

Basecamp provides the rest and recharge to do it all again the next day.

The Rebelle Rally staff keeps everyone safe with trail checks and vehicle maintenance.

Behind every awesome shot is someone working through the same conditions as the teams.

This year, the media team and staff are sleeping well on HEST!

Teammates must support each other through tough challenges.

No one wants a teammate who woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

Second place at the Rampage, and the best night’s sleep happened in this Sprinter. This month’s Rigs We Dig feature professional mountain biker and HEST Dream Team ambassador, finished on the women’s podium at one of freeride’s toughest events, then came back to a van built for exactly this.
Her 2024 Sprinter 144 AWD, built by has bike-ready storage for four bikes, a garage with a stand and tools for post-ride fixes, and a Dually mattress that makes recovery easy. Good sleep is how she shows up for the next run.
