As the camping season is winding down, Greg wanted to share a few thoughts!

Taking the reins of our family-run business this season has been an incredible, whirlwind journey. Like any good road trip, we hit a few unexpected bumps along the way—including navigating record-high fuel prices that we know impacted everyone's travel plans. Hurricanes also have to be mentioned (our thoughts and prayers are with those who had to cancel their trips). However, we have survived and eventually had a blast!

Through every challenge, the absolute highlight of our year has been working side-by-side and watching the upcoming 3rd generation of our family come on board as adults. Watching them step up, learn the ropes, and bring fresh energy to the grounds has made every bit of hard work worth it. Mason is here fulltime now. Matthew works occasionally when his new career allows!

To our amazing camping family: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your smiles, your patience, and your continued support through this transition mean the world to us. You are the reason we love what we do.

We are already hard at work planning for next season, and we can’t wait to show you the new features, amenities, and upgrades being added in 2027! And of course, we are stll open year round if you want to come visit during our quiet season. Especially during Thanksgiving for our annual meal.

From our family to yours, thank you for making this year so memorable. See you around the campfire!

🌶️🏆 What a spicy, unforgettable day! Our 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off was a delicious success at Big Meadow Family Campground—huge thanks to everyone who joined us, and congratulations to our winner, Sandra Craft!

Pam's Corner #2 v2

Since it is close to Halloween, i thought a quick story of Smoky Mountain folklore( or maybe just a story my Daddy and friends used to tell around campfires when I was younger) is appropriate.

The story was told to my friends and I about whistling at night in the Smoky Mountains. We were always given a warning that people should never whistle outdoors after dark because the sound acts as a way for spirits, haints, shapeshifters, or other unknown things to easily find you. This story used to scare me to death as a young girl. Can you imagine the dreams?

• The "Haint" : Old-timers in the mountains taught that spirits, restless dead, or creatures lacking a voice of their own are drawn to human whistling which will call a Haint.

• The Echo : If you whistle into the dark and hear a whistle return to you, old timers say it is not a person but something that answers and each answering whistle will be closer than the last. Mimicking human sound to lure you deeper into the wooded areas you had been warned to stay away from. (Turns out, this is a good way to keep a rambuntious group of kids silenced for an evening),.

• Roots: This belief is more than likely a mix of traditions—including Cherokee warnings about shape-shifters, Scots-Irish superstitions linking whistling at nightime to dark curses, and African influences tied to haints.

• Being Practical : You may note that high-pitched night whistles mimic a wounded animal's distress call—attracting four legged creatures like bears or painters(panthers)—or most likely give away a position of a still to moonshine revenuers and rivals.
