While Disney’s royal advisor was technically modelled after a 𝗥𝗲𝗱-𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹, the resident 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗬𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹 (Tockus leucomelas) certainly acts the part.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀:

𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗘𝘆𝗲-𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄: They are the only owl species in the world with bright, bare pink eyelids, used for subtle visual signalling across the dark Lowveld woodland.

𝗟𝗼𝘄𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Rather than building their own nests, they regularly commandeer large stick structures built by Martial Eagles or Hamerkops in the bushveld canopy.

𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗴 & 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗯 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Armed with immense foot strength, they easily overpower thick-skinned Lowveld targets like giant bullfrogs, scrub hares, and game birds in total darkness.

𝗙𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵: If a young fledgling gets grounded in the bush, it will lie completely limp and “play dead” to avoid predators until the threat passes.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of guiding a wonderful group of guests from the Netherlands to the summit of Mariepskop. The clear skies offered breathtaking, panoramic views of the Blyde River Canyon and the iconic Three Rondavels—a truly unforgettable landscape.
