From quiet midnight drinks to playful family foraging, it has been an incredible, unfiltered look into the rhythms of the bush.

These fascinating nocturnal animals play a vital role in our ecosystem—and watching them thrive right on our doorstep has been an absolute highlight of the season.

🚨 Slithering Celeb Alert: Meet the Yellow-Bellied Sand Snake!

If you’ve spotted a lightning-fast streak darting through the undergrowth at the lodge lately, you’ve likely met the Yellow-Bellied Sand Snake (Psammophis subtaeniatus)—the sports car of the bushveld! 🏎️💨

Here is the quick lowdown on our sleek neighbour:

Built for Speed: They don’t do slow

Fashion Forward: They rock a stylish striped look with a bright, buttery-yellow belly

Venomous vs. Poisonous: They aren’t poisonous (totally safe to touch), but they are mildly venomous.

Harmless to Humans: As rear-fanged snakes, their mild venom is strictly for subduing lunch (lizards & mice)

Eco-Friendly Pest Control: They do the hard work of keeping our local ecosystem perfectly balanced.

Next time you see a flash of yellow and bronze by the lodge, give a little wave to the fastest scales in the Lowveld! 🐍🍂

Here at The Baobab Bush Lodge, located within the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, we are regularly reminded of the incredible ecosystem we live in. Far from being mere scavengers, these apex predators are highly intelligent, vital custodians of the dark that keep the wilderness balanced and healthy. This footage captures our resident Bushveld Gerbil out for a casual midnight snack, completely unaware that a Large Spotted Genet is hot on his trail. What follows is a masterclass in terrible timing and near misses.

Watching the landscape shift from the vibrant emeralds of summer to the dusty golds of autmn is a powerful reminder of the resilience required to survive the Lowveld. Our local Vervet troop has officially traded their summer antics for the “winter huddle,” conserving energy as the cold sets in.

Throughout the season, we’ve witnessed them as more than just opportunists—they are master negotiators of their environment. Whether it’s a juvenile learning to find food or a male asserting his presence with a classic (and very colorful) display of confidence, there is never a dull moment in the bush.

Recently the Wild Life Estate has been a buzz of excitment filled with some predator movement around the Baobab Bush Lodge…

Last week a roaming pack of African wild dogs — around a dozen strong — passed through from an adjoining reserve, accompanied by sightings of a pair of jackals moving through the same areas

It’s a powerful reminder that this is one vast, connected wilderness where predators follow opportunity, not boundaries

Wild dogs are known as Africa’s most successful hunters, with success rates reaching up to 80%, relying on teamwork and endurance. Jackals, on the other hand, are clever opportunists — often shadowing larger predators, ready to make the most of any chance they get

Recent game drives have been a treat and seeing both in the same space is a rare glimpse into the balance of the bush — strategy, survival, and instinct playing out in real time.
