It’s a vast, wild place where the lions roam at Shumbalala Game Lodge, deep in the Thornybush Nature Reserve, one of the country’s great tracts of untamed game-viewing. Thornybush Nature Reserve lies in over 14 000ha of splendid solitude forming part of the Greater Kruger National Park. Shumbalala has as a sense of peace some would describe as being awake dreaming.

When you’re small, sometimes the best defence is convincing everyone you’re not. 🦎

Puffed up, mouth wide open and doing its very best to look intimidating — this flap-necked chameleon, filmed by guide Calvin York Davie, is putting on a defensive display.

When threatened, these chameleons can inflate their bodies and open their mouths to appear bigger and make a potential threat think twice.

And if that doesn’t work? That open mouth can deliver a bite if necessary.

One small creature, putting on a very big performance. 😮🦎

Sometimes, conservation starts by looking up. 🦅

A group of vultures circling high above the bush may seem like a small detail in a vast landscape. To those who know how to read the signs of the wild, however, their movements can tell us that something is happening below.

Vultures are remarkably efficient at locating carcasses, often gathering or descending when there is an opportunity to feed. This behaviour can also draw attention to an animal that has died — giving conservation teams another clue to follow when monitoring a protected area.

Their role goes much further than that. By quickly consuming carcasses, vultures help remove decaying matter from the environment and reduce opportunities for disease to spread. They are, quite literally, part of the landscape’s natural clean-up system.

Yet these important birds face serious pressures across Africa, including poisoning and other human-related threats.

This International Vulture Awareness Day, perhaps the invitation is a simple one: look up. The silhouettes riding the thermals above us are doing far more for the wild than we sometimes realise. 🌿

An elephant doesn’t know where one reserve ends and another begins. 🐘

There are no boundary lines drawn across the earth for a lion to follow. No signposts telling a wild dog it has entered a different reserve. Wildlife simply moves — following water, food, shelter, breeding opportunities and instincts shaped over generations.

And that is precisely why connected wilderness matters.
Shumbalala Game Lodge lies within Thornybush Nature Reserve, part of the wider Greater Kruger landscape. Here, the removal of fences between neighbouring protected areas has helped create a much larger connected wilderness in which wildlife can move more naturally.

It means an animal we encounter on a morning game drive is not confined to the small piece of Africa visible around us. Its world stretches far beyond it. 🌿

These open spaces allow animals to find resources as seasons change, establish territories and disperse into new areas. They also remind us that meaningful conservation is rarely about protecting one animal in one place. It is about protecting the space and connections that allow entire ecosystems to function.

On National Wildlife Day, we celebrate the animals we are fortunate enough to see — and the vast, connected landscapes they need when we cannot see them.

Spring doesn’t look the same everywhere in South Africa. 🌿🌸

At Shumbalala Game Lodge, September arrives with the golden, dusty colours of the dry season still across the bush. Days are growing warmer. The light has changed. Tree wisteria is in full bloom, bringing splashes of soft purple to the otherwise dry landscape.

Small signs of new growth are beginning to appear, but the bush is still waiting for one of its biggest seasonal moments — the return of the summer rains. 🌿

Travel south-west to our sister property, Franschhoek Country House & Villas, and spring tells a different story.

How is that possibly comfortable? 🐆🌳

It’s one of the questions we hear most on safari.

A leopard climbs high into a tree, finds what looks like the most awkward branch imaginable… then lies down as if it’s a luxury mattress.

The secret is in how they’re built.

Leopards have incredibly flexible spines, powerful shoulders and exceptional balance, allowing them to move through the branches with remarkable confidence. Their long tails act like balancing poles, helping them climb, turn and rest with ease high above the ground.

Trees are more than a good viewpoint. They’re a safe place to rest, keep an eye on their surroundings, escape larger predators like lions, and sometimes even store a meal out of reach.

To us, it looks impossible.

To a leopard, it’s simply the perfect place for an afternoon nap.

The first thing most guests mention is the quiet. No engine, no radio — just birds calling from the canopy and your own footsteps on dry ground.

✨ Yesterday we promised you our favourite spot for stargazing. Here it is.

On special occasions, dinner at Shumbalala doesn't quite end at the table. There's a short drive into the dark, a glow of lanterns in the grass… and something sweet waiting under the Milky Way.

A guest steps out after dinner, glances up on the walk back to their suite… and forgets where they were going.

If you're visiting from the Northern Hemisphere, the winter sky above Shumbalala Game Lodge is unlike anything at home. The air is dry, the nights are clear, and with no city lights for miles, thousands of stars come into view — including a few you can only see from this half of the world:

🌌 The Southern Cross – the constellation that has helped travellers find south for centuries.
