Rewilding Life: Draw & Explore Bangalay

Thursday 9 July · 3.30–5pm · $15 per child · Ages 8–13

There is so much going on in the bush around Bangalay, if you know how to look.

This July, local designer and illustrator Melissa Mylchreest of Rewilding_life, invites kids aged 8 - 13 years to slow down and really see what's living around them. The afternoon begins with an easy stroll through the Bangalay grounds, stopping for quick sketches along the way - a leaf, a feather, a spider in a web - before moving indoors to draw a little more.

No drawing experience needed. This isn't about perfect drawings. It's about using a pencil to notice the world more closely.

All materials provided. Places are limited to around 10 participants.

Some of the best winter afternoons are the ones spent making something with your hands.

This season, we're welcoming Waiting for Spring to Bangalay - a relaxed spoon carving workshop designed to slow things down and reconnect us with the simple satisfaction of creating something from scratch.

Over the course of the afternoon, you'll learn traditional spoon carving techniques, enjoy good company and leave with a handcrafted piece of your own.

No experience is necessary. Just a willingness to slow down, try something new and embrace a different pace for a few hours.

It's winter, the Bangalay way.

One of the most admired features of the Bangalay guest experience is the specially commissioned artwork created by renowned Australian artist Julie Paterson.

During an artist residency in Shoalhaven Heads, Julie immersed herself in the landscapes that surround Bangalay—walking through the endangered Bangalay Sand Forest, exploring Seven Mile Beach and observing the Shoalhaven River. These experiences inspired a stunning collection of layered screen-printed artworks created on reclaimed boards used during the construction of Bangalay.

The collection celebrates the unique ecological community that gives Bangalay its name, featuring native species including Bangalay eucalypts, banksias, Lilly Pilly, lomandra and Blue Flax Lily, while reflecting the habitats they provide for vulnerable wildlife.

The rich colours, textures, light and shadow of the bush-to-beach landscape are beautifully captured throughout the series, creating a strong connection between our built environment and the natural world beyond.
