Long summer evenings are precious, and doubly so when they are fine and warm as they have been recently. These are some views taken this evening on a short walk in the valley or the river Wye between Bakewell and Haddon Hall.

The photo below is a favourite spot on old packhorse trail that crosses the River Lathkill on an ancient stone bridge just below Conksbury Bridge and is only a couple of miles from the cottages.

These photos were taken earlier this evening on one of my favourite short walks around the unimproved meadows at Hard Rake, just off the back road from Bakewell to Buxton between Sheldon and Flagg. Curlew like this habitat and I often see and hear them up there, although these two were a long way off. A pair of ravens live in the small woodland and were flying around and croaking continually, but I didn't get a decent shot this time. However there was a clump of Southern Marsh Orchids in the bottom meadow. In a few weeks time there should be lots more orchids - mostly Common Spotted so I'll be making a few more visits over coming weeks. There are lots of other wild flowers in the meadows, which are not mowed until late Summer, allowing them to set seed. Today there were lots of Meadow Saxifrage and Buttercups and also a clump of Mouse-ear Hawkweed on an old mine spoil heap.

At last a couple of consecutive dry days meant that I could venture out into the countryside that is showing definite signs of Spring. These shots are from a favourite walk along Bradford Dale from Alport upstream to where the spring emerges from a cliff near Middleton. It's a popular route and there is always something to see. The steep sides of the upper valley are looking very different as many of the diseased ash trees that formerly clothed the steep slops have been cut down and it will take a few years before the newly planted saplings take hold. In the meantime it will be interesting to see how the ground vegetation changes with all the additional light. There weren't as many birds as I expected, but eventually I did see a dipper that posed for me and a perching kingfisher that was unfortunately too far away for a good shot.

With apologies to the Mamas & the Papas:

All the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray
I've been for a walk
On a winter's day

Well actually it was yesterday but here in the Peak District there's always something interesting to see, including on this occasion an old limestone gate post that looks like an alpine peak!
