A big milestone for The Seymour — our new windows are officially in production!

It’s fantastic to see the craftsmanship taking shape in the Sturrocks Joinery workshop. With a building dating back to 1898, getting the windows right was hugely important to us. We wanted to retain the character and proportions of the original house while bringing everything up to the standard needed for its next chapter.

There are a lot of windows to get through, so Sturrocks certainly have their work cut out!

Another major piece of the restoration now underway. Looking forward to seeing the first finished windows arriving on site.

A Fresh Start for the Garden 🌿

There’s been a huge amount happening inside and outside at The Seymour, and over the last few weeks our attention has turned to the garden.

We’ve brought in a garden designer who came very highly recommended, and after walking the whole site with us, the strongest piece of advice was pretty simple, rip it all out and start again!

For many years The Seymour operated as a care home, and understandably the gardens had been designed much more around utility, access and ease of maintenance than anything else.

We now have the opportunity to start again from scratch and create something really beautiful — a garden that complements the house, makes the most of the setting and is somewhere our family can enjoy and continue developing over the years.

So that’s exactly what we’ve done. Almost everything has been cleared back, giving us a completely blank canvas to work with.

There’s still an enormous amount to do, and it certainly doesn’t look very glamorous at the moment, but this is one of those stages where you have to make things look considerably worse before they can get better!

The lawns will be the first big step, followed by the borders, planting and the gradual return of some much-needed colour.

Like everything at The Seymour, we’re not looking for a quick fix. We want to create something that feels as though it belongs here and will only get better as it matures over the years.

We’re back on the roof at The Seymour and looking forward to getting started!

It’s such a pleasure to be able to restore this important building at the heart of the village and see it looking its very best once again.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about bringing the original details back to life and giving this beautiful old building the care it deserves.

🌅 Sunset sessions at The Seymour…

We’re making the most of this amazing weather and those long Scottish summer nights, putting in some late shifts while the sun is shining!

There’s something pretty special about seeing The Seymour and the River Tay in that golden evening light.

Plenty still to do, but not a bad office! 🌅🏰

The small extension is complete — and what a transformation.

Our aim with every part of The Seymour restoration is to make sure that anything repaired or renewed feels as though it has always belonged here. This little extension has been no exception.

The roof has been completely renewed, incorporating beautiful scalloped slates and some spectacular traditional leadwork. One of our favourite details is the bespoke lead vent, handcrafted with an “S” for Seymour — a small detail, but exactly the sort of craftsmanship we want this restoration to be remembered for.

We’ve done everything possible to tie the extension back into the architecture, materials and character of the original 1898 house. No shortcuts and no modern details that look out of place.

Another small part of The Seymour brought back to life — and hopefully ready for another 100+ years.

Site visit from the boss today👷‍♀️🏰

She may only be 2½ years old and barely 3 feet tall, but don’t let that fool you, she runs a tight ship! Every tradesman got the once-over, and she was quickly asking what everyone was doing.

Apparently we are building her a princess castle. 👑

Our latest handcrafted lead hopper for the annexe is complete, and we think it’s a real work of art. Every detail has been made by hand using traditional techniques, showing the incredible skill and care that’s going into every corner of The Seymour.

The top mould matches the balcony and we took the design off the frieze. Check out the comments for a closer look at the craftsmanship.

We’ve been lucky with a fantastic summer so far, and we’ve been making the most of it by turning our attention to the gardens at The Seymour. 🌿

Getting everything planted now gives it plenty of time to establish before we start welcoming our first guests next summer.

Now the scaffolding’s up, we’ve finally been able to get a proper look at these beautiful hand-carved sandstone balcony panels.

It got us thinking, were these just decorative, or did they actually mean something?

The leaf pattern makes us wonder if there’s any link to the Seymour name or family, or if it’s simply a fantastic example of Victorian craftsmanship.

Does anyone know the history behind them, or have a theory of their own? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

One of the details we’ve been working on this week is cutting a new stone string course to help tie the extension seamlessly into the original house.

Rather than using a modern alternative, we’ve sourced Red Lazonby sandstone from the very same quarry that supplied the stone for The Seymour over 125 years ago. The colour and texture are almost identical, helping the new work blend naturally with the Victorian building rather than stand out from it.

It’s these small details that take more time, but they’re what make a heritage restoration feel authentic.
