Wistlandpound Reservoir | Still water on the edge of the moor.

Green shores, quiet water and a wide summer sky at Wistlandpound Reservoir, tucked into the countryside where Exmoor slips down towards the North Devon coast.

There's a gentle waymarked trail right around the water β€” about three miles of easy walking through meadow and woodland, with picnic spots along the shore. It's a favourite with families and dog walkers, and on a still June day the lake gives you back a mirror image of every passing cloud.

Challacombe and the wilds of the western moor are just up the lane, so you can pair a lakeside morning with a moorland afternoon.

Are you a lake person or a sea person?

Wheddon Cross | A tunnel of June green. 🌳

Sunlight filtering through a leafy avenue near Wheddon Cross β€” the kind of path that pulls you along to see what's around the bend. 🚢

In high summer the lanes and bridleways around here turn into green tunnels, the canopy closing overhead and the verges thick with ferns and foxgloves. 🌿 This is walking country at its easiest: shady tracks, birdsong, and a pub at the end of it.

Dunkery Beacon is just up the road if you want the big views β€” but honestly, paths like this are half the reason people come back to Exmoor year after year. β˜€οΈ

Does this remind you of childhood adventures down green lanes? πŸ’¬

Winsford Hill | Where the barley meets the moor.

A field of young barley sways on the slopes near Winsford Hill, and beyond it the land folds away into a deep green valley β€” pasture, woodland and hedgerow stitched together the way only this corner of Somerset can manage.

This is the farmed edge of Exmoor, where generations of hill farmers have worked the land between the open moor and the river valleys. In June it's at its most generous: the crops still green, the hedges full, the combes below holding their morning shadows long after the tops are in sunshine.

It's a landscape made by hand over centuries β€” and best explored on foot.

Could you see yourself walking this path on a June morning?

Cuain Cottage, Watchet | "A lovely cottage, steps from the harbour which comes with a parking pass that can be used in many local car parks. Spotlessly clean with very comfortable beds and a very efficient heating system."

A beautiful base in Watchet for exploring everything Exmoor has to offer. From ancient woodland trails to charming village pubs, the best of the moor is right on your doorstep. It's the kind of place where you arrive as a visitor and leave feeling like you've found a second home.

Withypool | Six arches over the Barle. πŸŒ‰

The old stone bridge at Withypool, reflected in a glassy River Barle on a blue-sky summer morning. πŸ’™

This is one of Exmoor's most peaceful village scenes β€” cottages gathered by the riverbank, the moor rising behind, and the Barle sliding quietly under the arches on its way down to Tarr Steps. 🏞️

Stand here for ten minutes and you might see a dipper working the stones, or trout holding in the current. Or you might see nothing at all but the water β€” which is rather the point. β˜€οΈ

What would you do first here β€” riverside walk, or village pub? πŸ’¬

Middle Stolford Cottage, Brendon Hills | Pizza oven, big table, room for the whole family

Some of the best holiday memories are made around a table. At Middle Stolford there's a clay pizza oven, a covered barbecue, and a dining table that seats ten β€” so the whole party can gather, whatever the weather.

It's a 16th-century farmhouse sleeping nine, with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a hot tub on the terrace and a wood-burner for the evenings. Dogs welcome. 58 reviews, every single one a perfect 10 out of 10.

Prime August weeks are open now β€” and if you're thinking ahead, September short breaks are available too.

Winsford Hill | One tree, holding its ground.

A lone hawthorn stands on the open common of Winsford Hill, shaped by decades of weather, catching the last warm light of a summer evening. Around it, nothing but moor grass, sky, and silence.

Winsford Hill is one of Exmoor's great open commons β€” home to the Wambarrows, ancient Bronze Age burial mounds, and to herds of free-roaming Exmoor ponies. On a clear evening you can see from Dartmoor to the Brendon Hills. Trees that survive up here earn their place, and this one has clearly been at it a long while.

Some places just ask you to stop and stand still for a moment. This is one of them.

Have you ever watched the sun go down from an Exmoor hilltop?
