High Leys Lodge

High Leys Lodge Situated in 5 acres of established garden on the outskirts of Te Anau, High Leys Lodge offers an adult only, peaceful, private and luxurious escape.

Our three double rooms, all have tiled ensuites, and prices include an a la carte breakfast. A boutique lodge offering three double rooms with a gourmet breakfast and evening canapes with a complimentary glass of wine included. We have two king rooms with a lake view and one queen room with a garden view. Home baking is available during the day and we can arrange tours and dining either before or during your stay.

Did you know that the Fiordland Tokoeka/Kiwi bird have strong family values?

Unlike many other Kiwi, Fiordland Tokoeka have been known to form family groups where older offspring stick around (for up to seven years!) and can even help with tasks like incubation!

Did you know there are different types of Kiwi? Well, we have our very own Fiordland Tokoeka which is a subspecies of the southern brown kiwi can mainly be found in Fiordland National Park!

Here are some interesting facts about the Fiordland Tokoeka: -

- They’re one of the largest kiwi subspecies, boasting reddish-brown, fur-like feathers streaked with black.

- They are quite versatile with their habitat being able to live in the native forests to subalpine tussock grasslands.

- They’re mostly nocturnal but may occasionally forage during the day, who knows you may get to see one!

- They have unusual breeding as the males usually incubate the single large egg for about 70 days, sometimes getting a helping hand from the female and they can even nest twice in one season!

- With an estimated 15,000 birds left, predator control and habitat protection are helping stabilize their numbers thank goodness!

Fiordland Crested Penguins (Tawaki) are impressive to look at - they look so regal and dignified!

We thought we’d share some interesting facts about them: -

1 - They have a striking yellow crest. This signature broad, drooping yellow crest starts at the beak and extends over the eyes, giving them a uniquely stylish look.

2 - They are shy and largely nocturnal when ashore, often hiding in dense forests or rocky crevices by day, but we are lucky enough to see them quite a bit, especially in Doubtful Sound!

3 - Did you know they spend long hours at sea? In fact, 80% of their lives out in the ocean, living mostly solitary lives foraging for fish, crustaceans, and squid.

4 - They have quite an unusual breeding strategy. They return to shore from July to December to breed in secluded colonies, laying two eggs of different sizes — usually only the second (larger) egg hatches.

5 - After breeding, they go through a three-week moult, shedding old feathers and losing up to half their body weight while regrowing a fresh set!

6 - It’s estimated that there are only between 2,500–9,000 individuals left, threats like introduced predators, habitat loss, and fishing have placed them on the IUCN “Vulnerable” list.
